Boatman's Daughter (1935) tells the tale of Ah Ling, a kind-hearted woman residing in Hangzhou with her father, who earns a living by ferrying passengers across the West Lake. Ah Ling's world revolves around her love for Tie’er, a dedicated factory worker who regularly uses her boat. Their tranquil existence is shattered when a wealthy and carefree artist from Shanghai enters the scene. Due to her father's mounting debts, Ah Ling is tragically sold into prostitution. Three months pass before Tie’er discovers her in a brothel and attempts to rescue her, only to be apprehended for his efforts.
