1956 · Movie · 119 min. · United States

The Searchers (1956) follows the journey of Ethan Edwards (John Wayne), a tough Civil War veteran who comes back to his brother Aaron's (Walter Coy) Texas residence in 1868. When Rev. Samuel Johnson Clayton (Ward Bond) organizes a group to pursue the Comanche who have taken the cattle of neighbor Lars Jorgenson (John Qualen), Ethan joins the effort. Upon their return, they discover the Edwards family has been brutally murdered and the two daughters, Lucy (Pippa Scott) and Debbie (Natalie Wood), have been kidnapped. The group continues the search for the girls but eventually retreats as winter approaches. Ethan and his unwilling partner, Martin Pawley (Jeffrey Hunter), the girls' part-Cherokee stepbrother, persist in their quest for another seven years, with Ethan's hatred for the Indians intensifying with each passing season.
