The Flowers of War (2011) is set during the 1937 Nanking Massacre, a dark chapter in the Second Sino-Japanese War. The story follows John Miller, an American mortician who takes refuge in a Catholic church. Inside, he encounters a group of schoolgirls, prostitutes from a nearby brothel, and wounded Chinese soldiers. As the Japanese army closes in, Miller is forced to assume the role of protector, disguising himself as a priest to shield the vulnerable. The film explores themes of sacrifice, humanity, and resilience amidst the horrors of war, as disparate individuals unite to survive and preserve their dignity.
