Angel Guts: Red Vertigo
1988 · Movie · 74 min. · Japan
The Angel Guts films were given their name by manga writer and director Takashi Ishii, who intended them to be a tribute to victimized women, Angels with Guts. After being attacked by terminal patients at the hospital where she works, Nami rushes home to her lover only to find him cheating on her with another woman. Fleeing in despair, Nami is knocked over by disgraced stockbroker Muraki who is running from his own problems. Fired from his job, deserted by his wife and in serious debt, he attempts to retake control of his life by abducting and raping Nami. In this, his first film, director Takashi Ishii deals with people at their most vulnerable and appalling, and finds compassion and humanity within this seemingly most arid territory.
