It's the mid-eighties. Brian Jackson (James McAvoy) is a working-class kid starting his first year at an upper-class British university. Brian has some pretty big goals for his freshman year: he wants to debate radical political philosophies, speak new languages and sop up fact after precious fact. But one aspiration looms over and above all of these goals - Brian is hell-bent on becoming a contestant on the popular British television game show "University Challenge." He feels he has a lot to prove, and he needs a national forum in which to do it. This is a tale about the particular growing pains we suffer in university - an environment where identities are lugged around and leafed through like so many library books. As Brian tries to cram his brain full of scholarly morsels ranging from literature to physics, his head is turned by alluring fellow student and "University Challenge" team-mate Alice Harbinson (Alice Eve). After a spate of missteps, he decides the only way to win Alice's affection is a spectacular victory on the show: everything will ride on his "advanced general knowledge skills."
