One Second (2020) follows a convict who is dispatched to a labor camp in the barren northwest region of China during the tumultuous Cultural Revolution. Driven by a singular goal—to catch a glimpse of his daughter in a newsreel—he cleverly escapes and journeys to a nearby town's cinema. Along the way, he encounters a young wanderer with a similar urgent mission, who steals the film reel. Intriguingly, this mysterious object, sought after by both men for distinct reasons, sparks an unlikely bond between them.
