Ballad of a Soldier (1959) follows the journey of Alyosha, a 19-year-old soldier who, during World War II, is awarded a medal for his bravery on the battlefield. Instead of keeping the medal, Alyosha requests a brief leave to return home and fix the roof of his family's house. During his journey eastward, he encounters Shura, who is traveling to visit her aunt. Over the course of their few days together, Alyosha and Shura develop a deep emotional connection, ultimately falling in love amidst the backdrop of war and personal longing.
