Venomous (2001) begins in 1990 when terrorists, posing as journalists, infiltrate a biological research facility in the Mojave Desert and set off explosives, leading to the escape of several rattlesnake specimens. Fast forward to the present day in the small California town of Santa Mira Springs, where Dr. David Henning, a local hospital physician, is baffled by two patients who succumb to snake bites within hours. He sends samples to his ex-wife, Christine Edmonton, a civilian scientist at the Department of Defense virology research lab in Bethesda. Christine discovers an unknown virus, but her superior, Major-General Arthur Manchek, recognizes it as the same virus from the escaped Mojave snakes. He deceives Christine by substituting the samples with E. Coli and imposes a military blockade around Santa Mira. Christine joins David in their quest for an antidote as the snakes continue to infect more people. Unbeknownst to them, General Sparks, Manchek's superior, issues Presidential Directive 7-12, ordering the town's destruction by bombing to conceal the virus's existence.
