Swept Under (S)
2022 · Movie · 10 min. · United States
After receiving a housewarming rug from his sister Tricia, a Cambodian adoptee named Cameron slowly discovers that his rug is not normal. He rips a hole while dusting it off and pulls out strands of hair from its surface. Suddenly, he is grabbed and pulled inside the rug. In the dark void, he is beaten to death with his own baseball bat. Several days later, Tricia and Cam’s neighbor search for him in the backyard. Then, by intercutting their search with archival footage, parallels are drawn between Tricia’s actions and the American invasion of Cambodia in the 1970s. Their actions both led to Cameron and Cambodia being “swept under the rug.” Unable to find Cameron, Tricia and the neighbor roll up the rug. As they leave, a gust of wind opens the rug, revealing that it was “Proudly Made in the USA”.
