Blockade (1938)

Blockade (1938) is a dramatic film that delves into the complexities of the Spanish Civil War, a period marked by the United States' official neutrality. This film, produced by Walter Wanger, stands out as one of the few Hollywood productions to tackle the conflict, albeit with a more subdued approach. The story centers around Marco (Henry Fonda), a humble farmer who is forced to flee his land due to invading soldiers. In a bold act of defiance, Marco delivers a powerful speech advocating for freedom from tyranny, inspiring his fellow peasants to rally behind him. Marco's leadership and unwavering beliefs propel him to become a pivotal figure in the Loyalist forces. While stationed in a besieged city, Marco encounters Norma (Madeleine Carroll), a spy working for the forces allied with Franco. Norma's loyalties are torn between her family's safety and the political turmoil. Despite their differing allegiances, the two form a bond during a harrowing bombing raid. Norma eventually finds herself swayed by Marco's fervent call to protect the innocent people of Spain. Although producer Wanger was passionate about the Spanish conflict, the film avoids specific political details and the uniforms of the troops are designed to be ambiguous to avoid offending nations that supported Franco. Despite these concessions, Blockade (1938) was still considered a significant leftist statement and was used against screenwriter John Howard Lawson during his blacklisting in the 1950s.
