Thérèse Étienne (1958) follows the story of a young woman named Thérèse who, burdened by the constant gossip surrounding her family due to her father's prison sentence, decides to leave her hometown. She ventures to the canton of Bern, where she secures a position working for Anton Muller, a prosperous and domineering farmer. Initially, Anton is captivated by Thérèse and attempts to make her his mistress, but she firmly rejects his advances. Despite her initial resistance, Thérèse eventually agrees to marry Anton. On their wedding day, she encounters Gottfried, Anton's son, and the two instantly fall deeply in love.
