Oyuki, the Virgin (1935)

1935 · Movie · 87 min. · Japan

Oyuki, the Virgin (1935) is a cinematic adaptation of Kawaguchi Matsutaro’s take on Maupassant’s “Boule de Suif” (“Lump of Fat”), which also inspired Ford’s “Stagecoach.” The film incorporates unique elements from director Kenji Mizoguchi. Maupassant’s original narrative, set against the backdrop of the Franco-Prussian War, revolves around a group of individuals attempting to escape the war zone in a horse-drawn carriage. The bourgeois passengers derisively refer to the prostitute among them as a “lump of fat.” When they are captured by the enemy, they propose sending her to the commander as a sacrificial offering. The next day, as they depart the battlefield, they only criticize and insult her.
