Paths of Glory (1957) follows Colonel Dax (Kirk Douglas), the leader of the depleted 701st Infantry Regiment of the French Army, entrenched along the Western Front during the stagnant phase of World War I in 1916. The Allies have been locked in a grueling stalemate with the German forces for two years. Dax, a former criminal lawyer, yearns for his regiment to be reassigned away from the front lines. However, the higher-ups have different intentions. Generals Broulard (Adolphe Menjou), the corps commander and a polished emissary of the high command, and General Mireau (George Macready), the divisional general in charge, convene at a serene, picturesque chateau. Broulard instructs Mireau that his division must launch a full-scale assault on an impenetrable German stronghold known as the Ant Hill, with the objective of capturing it within a mere 48 hours.
