Tormented by major depression, visions of a frozen death-ridden lake, and suicidal thoughts, 21-year-old Dennis returns home after a hopeless attempt to study in Antwerp. He moves back in with his controlling mother, Thea, in a rough neighbourhood in the south of the Netherlands. Feelings of guilt and unprocessed emotions about the death of Dennis's Nigerian father, whose death he witnessed as a little boy only started to truly affect him when his ex-girlfriend, Asia, turned out to be pregnant by him.
