Naughty Detective Club (TV Series)
1968 · Series · 25 min. · Japan
A group of young boys (plus a token girl and her little brother, the obligatory brat) form a detective club, pooling their talents for brain, brawn, invention, and driving skills to solve crimes in Tokyo. Much to the consternation of police chief Nakamura, they often succeed where the professionals fail. The first show made by Tezuka's studio from a non-Tezuka work, this series adapts the juvenile Boy Detectives Club stories of Ranpo Edogawa, a 19th-century novelist better known today for his Poe-inspired tales of horror and suspense, some of which were adapted for the Animated Classics of Japanese Literature. A watershed show that transferred the literary penchant for amateur sleuthing into the anime market, setting up a formula that survives to this day in Conan the Boy Detective and the Young Kindaichi Files.
