Ah Fei (1983) follows the life of Ah-fei, whose mother, Hsin-chin, originates from an affluent family led by a physician. Hsin-chin's marriage to a young engineer is far from blissful, and her situation deteriorates when her husband's infidelity and her family's financial decline leave her struggling. To support her family, Hsin-chin is compelled to sell her dowry and pay off debts. After a scandal involving her husband's affair, Hsin-chin takes control of the family dynamics. The family relocates to Taipei, where Ah-fei excels in her studies. Her father transforms into a subdued individual, while her mother assumes a dominant role. Ah-fei, as the daughter, faces her mother's favoritism towards her son, necessitating her to prove her worth to attend a more prestigious school.
