Gaily, Gaily (1969) follows the journey of a naive young man, Ben Harvey, who departs from his humble small-town life in 1910 to seek refuge from his inner temptations in the bustling city of Chicago. Shortly after his arrival, he falls victim to a pickpocket, leaving him penniless and on the brink of starvation. Fortunately, he encounters Queen Lil, who takes him in and provides him with a place to stay in her upscale brothel, believing it to be a respectable boarding house. Ben is then offered a position at a local newspaper. As he navigates his new life, he becomes entangled in a political power struggle between a seemingly virtuous reformer with hidden corruption and an openly corrupt councilman. With the guidance of an alcoholic investigative journalist and the brothel's innocent young woman, Ben must decide whether to expose the corruption or succumb to the allure of power.
