March on Rome (1962)

1962 · Movie · 90 min. · Italy

March on Rome (1962) presents a comedic take on the historic March on Rome by Benito Mussolini's black shirts, as seen through the eyes of two inexperienced and gullible new recruits. The film's central theme revolves around the progressive betrayal of the fascist party's promises. The two protagonists methodically check off each key point of the fascist program, as outlined on a propaganda leaflet, only to find them contradicted by reality. Initially, fascism was a radical republican movement, wary of big businesses, the nobility, and the Catholic Church. Mussolini himself had socialist roots before his nationalism intensified. Upon reaching Rome and realizing the extent of the contradictions, the two recruits decide to leave the fascist party at the very moment of its triumph.
