More than half of Borneo 's tropical forests have been destroyed by man in the past 20 years , mainly for oil extraction . Threatened by the massive loss of habitat many orangutans have died of starvation or were killed by poachers . The lucky ones have ended up in the hands of Nyaru Menteng rescue operation launched by the Foundation for the Borneo Orangutan Survival .
