Heidi (1937) follows the journey of a young orphan, Heidi, who is placed under the guardianship of her stern and reclusive grandfather, Adolph Kramer (Jean Hersholt), after losing her parents at a young age. Despite his initial gruff demeanor, Heidi's innocence and charm gradually soften her grandfather's heart, leading to a deep bond between the two. However, their peaceful life is disrupted when Heidi's malicious and greedy aunt (Mady Christians) abducts her and forces her into servitude in the household of the affluent Segemann (Sidney Blackmer). Undeterred, Heidi forms a strong friendship with Segemann's disabled daughter, Klara (Marcia Mae Jones), inspiring her to walk independently for the first time in years. In gratitude, Segemann vows to reunite Heidi with her grandfather. Yet, the wicked governess, Fraulein Rottenmeier (Mary Nash), schemes to keep Heidi and her grandfather apart, creating a series of obstacles that must be overcome before the heartwarming reunion can finally occur.
