Telefon (1977) follows the story of Nicolai Dalchimski, a deranged KGB operative who absconds with a notebook containing the identities of covert KGB agents who were dispatched to the United States in the 1950s. These agents, under hypnosis, were programmed to carry out their missions upon hearing a specific line from a Robert Frost poem. Dalchimski, now in the U.S., begins contacting these agents, prompting them to execute sabotage operations against military installations. Unable to reveal the crisis to the U.S. government, the Soviets dispatch Colonel Borzov, a military intelligence officer, to locate and neutralize Dalchimski before his actions escalate into a full-blown war.
