Seven Alone (1974) follows the imagined journey of the Sager family, inspired by true events. The family embarks on a wagon train expedition from Missouri to Oregon, initially experiencing smooth sailing. However, their fortunes take a dramatic turn when Henry Sager succumbs to blood poisoning after an Indian attack, and Naomi Sager passes away from pneumonia shortly thereafter. The wagon train leaders opt to send the children back, but the eldest, John, who had been dismissed by adults as lazy and worthless, steps up to guide his siblings through the untamed wilderness, determined to honor his parents' original quest.
