The development of political activism on the part of San Francisco homosexuals is the underlying subject of this documentary, which chronicles the political life and assassination of San Francisco Supervisor Harvey Milk, who was killed by colleague Dan White on November 22, 1978. The then mayor of the city, George Moscone, was also killed. The film documents the murders and the subsequent trial and the resulting effect on the gay community. 1985: Oscar: Best Documentary.
