Last Chance Harvey (2008) follows the story of Harvey Shine (Dustin Hoffman), a jingle writer from New York who is on the brink of losing his unfulfilling job. His boss (Richard Schiff) gives him a final opportunity to prove himself, but Harvey must return from a weekend trip to London for his daughter’s (Liane Balaban) wedding to make a crucial meeting. Upon arriving in London, Harvey discovers that his daughter has chosen her stepfather (James Brolin) to walk her down the aisle instead of him. Despite his heartache, he attempts to leave the wedding early to catch his flight, but ultimately misses it. When he calls his boss to explain, he is promptly fired. Seeking solace at the airport bar, Harvey meets Kate (Emma Thompson), a middle-aged, somewhat prickly employee of the Office of National Statistics. Kate's life revolves around work, occasional awkward blind dates, and constant calls from her overbearing mother (Eileen Atkins). Harvey and Kate form a bond, with Harvey finding renewed energy from Kate's intelligence and compassion, and Kate finding inspiration in Harvey's presence. Their unexpected connection leads to a transformative journey for both of them.
