Mother and Child
2009 · Movie · 127 min. · United States
A drama centered around three women: A 50-year-old woman (Annette Bening), the daughter (Naomi Watts) she gave up for adoption 35 years ago, and an African American woman (Kerry Washington) looking to adopt a child of her own. Mother and Child is about three women and their great love affairs: with their men, their daughters, and their own mothers. At the insistence of her own mother, Karen gave up the baby she had at the age of 14. Now, 36 years later, mourning the loss of her only child, she meets a man who is willing to bring both family and joy into her life. Elizabeth was the infant of that birth, and now struggles with her own issues of family, sexuality, and power. She, too, has the capacity and the opportunity for love, but it will take her own pregnancy to teach her how to be fully open to the adoration of another human being. Lucy is clear -or so she believes - on her intention and readiness for children. Her own mother will be pivotal as Lucy learns to care for the little girl she has always wanted. Mother and Child is about the choices we make, the chances we miss, the opportunities we seize, and the power of the unbreakable bond between mother and child.
