The Brothers Karamazov
1958 · Movie · 146 min. · United States
This epic 19th-century Russian tale is based on the critically acclaimed novel by Fyodor Dostoyevsky. Four very different brothers growing up in a rural village in tsarist Russia plot against their wealthy, overbearing father. When the eldest brother, Dmitri, falls in love with his father's mistress, jealousy drives him to consider killing his father. But, ultimately, another brother takes his father's life and wrongfully accuses Dmitri of the heinous crime. Richly splendid costumes as well as a remarkable ensemble cast contribute to the lavish atmosphere of this epic tale of romance, greed, and salvation.
