A family is engrossed in preparations for their eldest daughter's wedding, while Dr. Oakes (Jason Robards) diligently serves as the chief of surgery at the local university hospital. As the world teeters on the brink of nuclear war, the Russians launch a devastating nuclear strike on a West German city and a U.S. warship in the Persian Gulf. The U.S. retaliates, and the Soviets respond by targeting NATO regional headquarters with a nuclear warhead. Panic ensues as people hastily construct fallout shelters, but the horror intensifies when nuclear missiles are launched from silos along the Kansas-Missouri border.
