South Pacific (TV)

Rodgers & Hammerstein’s classic musical about war, love, and racial bigotry is adapted for television in ABC’s entertaining version of SOUTH PACIFIC. Based on the novel TALES OF THE SOUTH PACIFIC by James A. Michener, the musical stars Glenn Close as the spunky Nellie Forbush, a World War II nurse stationed on a tropical island in the Pacific. Nellie meets a French plantation owner, Emile (Rade Sherbedgia), and falls in love with the mysterious man whose lifestyle is so different from her own Little Rock roots. Harry Connick Jr. is Lt. Joseph Cable, a marine sent to the island with top-secret plans to spy on the nearby Japanese fleet. After Joe becomes friends with a local merchant, Bloody Mary (Lori Tan Chinn), she brings him to the enchanted island of Bali Ha’i, where she introduces him to her daughter--an exotic beauty he soon becomes enamored with. The lovely tropical location is the perfect backdrop to showcase Rodgers & Hammerstein’s mesmerizing score, which includes the classic songs "Some Enchanted Evening," "Bali Ha’i," "There Is Nothin’ Like a Dame," "Younger Than Springtime," "A Cock-eyed Optimist," and "I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Outta My Hair."
