A Sweet Scent of Death (Un dulce olor a muerte) (1999) begins with a grim discovery in the oat fields of Carranco. Ramón stumbles upon the lifeless body of his clandestine teenage love, Adela. In a desperate attempt to preserve her dignity, he drapes his shirt over her. Rumors swiftly spread through the town, accusing Ramón of being involved in the murder of his supposed girlfriend. Meanwhile, a mysterious gypsy, known as the Gitano, flees Carranco after a passionate night with Gabriela, abruptly interrupted by an unknown figure with a flashlight. That same evening, at the local bar, Sheriff Justino and other patrons debate the appropriate course of action. La Amistad, wielding his flashlight, dramatically accuses the Gitano of the murder. Marcelino, a disgruntled elderly man, urges Ramón to avenge his "girlfriend's" death. Ramón now faces a daunting challenge: prove his innocence to the townspeople or leave Carranco in disgrace.
