Sounder (1972) follows the journey of the Morgan family, a resilient and close-knit group of African American sharecroppers living in Louisiana during the Great Depression of 1933. The family's life takes a dramatic turn when the patriarch, Nathan Lee Morgan, is imprisoned for a minor offense, sending shockwaves through their tight-knit community. Rebecca Morgan, the steadfast matriarch, decides to send their eldest son, around 11 years old, on a challenging journey to visit his incarcerated father. This trip becomes a transformative experience for the young boy, as he encounters various challenges and stays briefly with a committed African American educator.
