Tonka (1958) unfolds in the Dakota territory during the 1870s, where a young Sioux named White Bull demonstrates his bravery by capturing and taming a wild colt, whom he names Tonka. When a harsh cousin asserts ownership of the horse due to his superior status, White Bull releases Tonka into the wild. The horse eventually finds its way to a captain in the US cavalry, coinciding with the period when Sitting Bull unites the tribes to challenge the expanding US influence, symbolized by the prejudiced General Custer. The narratives of White Bull and Tonka converge at the meeting point of the Little and Big Horn rivers.
