Eros (2004)

2004 · Movie · 104 min. · Hong Kong

Wong Kar wai’s "Shou" (The Hand) is the story of a young tailor’s long-unrequired love for a beautiful Hong Kong courtesan. Over many years, he lovingly crafts the clothes she wears for other men. Over time, the seemingly unattainable fantasy woman loses everything, just as the tailor prospers in his career. Then the unexpected happens. Steven Soderbergh’s Equilibrium is about a stressed-out 1950s advertising man who has been suffering from a series of recurring erotic dreams. During his session with psychiatrist Dr Pearl he describes his dream of a woman who is familiar to him – but he can’t recall who she is when he wakes up. Through the course of a very offbeat hour of therapy, we discover why that is. Michelangelo Antonioni’s "Il filo pericoloso delle cose" (The Dangerous Thread of Things) follows a fortyish married couple who no longer have anything to say to one another. At an impasse, the man has a passionate one night stand with a free-spirited young girl, but this experience also fails to satisfy him. Later on, the wife and the girl meet. Shou (The Hand) Length: 39' - China (Hong Kong) Wong Kar-wai about his movie: «Shooting The Hand was an extremely intense experience. We started working on the project in 2003 during the SARS epidemic. Our original plan had been to film in Shanghai but that had to be cancelled. The only places where we could shoot were Hong Kong and Macau. We tried to film as quickly as possible. The last two days the production never stopped. Every day we began our ritual by thoroughly washing our hands and putting on masks. Following the doctors’ advice we avoided any physical contact. This situation gave me the idea for a film on the sense of touch» Equilibrium Length: 35’ - Country of Origin: USA Steven Soderbergh about his movie: «I wanted my name on a poster with Michelangelo Antonioni» Il filo pericoloso delle cose (The Dangerous Thread of Things) by Michelangelo Antonioni Length: 30’ - Country of Origin: Italy Enrica Antonioni about the movie: «That’s how it went. We were all together to celebrate Tonino Guerra’s eightieth birthday in Pennabilli. We hadn’t seen Stéphane for ages. There had been years of silence after our attempt in Los Angeles to make I due telegrammi. We were unsuccessful. Not being able to make that film was really painful. At Tonino’s we hugged each other and Stéphane said to me: “No matter what you want me to do for Michelangelo, remember I’ll always be willing”. “Michelangelo always wanted to make an erotic film”, I replied almost provocatively …. This time we were successful!» -Enrica Antonioni-
