The Iron Mask (1962) unfolds in the isolated confines of Ste-Marguerite citadel, where a mysterious prisoner, concealed behind an iron mask, is held captive. The cardinal, Mazarin, who governs France on behalf of the young King Louis XIV, faces a dilemma: the masked prisoner must marry a Spanish princess to secure a peace treaty, but his flirtatious behavior and terminal illness complicate matters. Mazarin dispatches the indomitable musketeer Charles d'Artagnan and his three companions on a clandestine mission to retrieve the captive, still wearing his mask. Meanwhile, the governor's daughter, secretly enamored with the prisoner, orchestrates an escape just as the musketeers arrive.
