The Flame Within (1935) follows the story of Lillian Belton, a woman of considerable means who attempts to end her life through a drug overdose. Her physician, Gordon Phillips, refers her to psychiatrist Mary White for intensive care. During her stay, Lillian reaches out to Jack Kerry, her love interest, from Mary's office and attempts to leap from a window, only to be halted by Mary. It is revealed that Jack's indifference and alcoholism are the root causes of Lillian's emotional turmoil. Mary persuades Jack to enroll in a rehabilitation program to overcome his alcoholism. After a challenging journey and eight months of treatment, Jack appears to have recovered but has developed deep feelings for Mary. Mary, however, reminds him of Lillian's profound dependence on him. Despite this, Lillian and Jack tie the knot and seem content. Meanwhile, Gordon has been urging Mary to abandon her medical practice and marry him, but Mary is deeply committed to her work. At a masquerade ball, Jack confesses his love for Mary, leading to a tense and jealous reaction from Lillian.
