Locked down in his Tahitian cabin by the French colonial authorities in 1903, painter Paul Gauguin is forced to paint a new masterpiece to save his five-year-old native son while battling illness and torn between sanity and madness. In the course of these events, he has visions of the past; especially, about his life and his work in the Panama Canal, the place where he began his artistic career.
