Sudden Rain
1956 · Movie · 91 min. · Japan
Sudden Rain dwells on how the negative aspects of married life can become overwhelming and quite stressful. Setsuko Hara plays a woman whose entire existence seems to boil down to nothing more than scraping by with two meals a day and constant bickering with her husband. His job is looking like it won't last much longer, but he will not endorse the idea of his wife gaining employment in order to take care of the financial difficulties. He feels that they should separate so he can go back to his village and start life anew. There is a jealousy that brews between the neighbors as they each see the other as lucky for having a more ideal and understanding spouse than they currently have. The finale is a wonderful metaphor for how the two leads are meant to work together to keep their world from blowing up right in front of them.
