During the Second World War, Kaji, a japanese pacifist, tries to avoid military service by accepting a job as a supervisor in the mines of Manchuria, in occupied territory. Kaji tries to improve the conditions of the workers but he is ignored by the concentration camp chief. One day, his repressed hatred explodes and brings terrible consequences.
