Set in the deep South in the late 1950’s, twelve years old girl Tiger Ann wants nothing more than to get out of the small rural town of Saitter, Louisiana, far away from her mentally disabled mother, her "slow" father and her classmates who taunt her. Tiger is becoming more and more embarrassed, especially about her mother who has the mind of six years old. Tiger wishes her mother could be more like her aunt Dorie Kay, who lives in the city and is smart and sophisticated. So when Aunt Dorie Kay asks Tiger to spend the summer with her in Baton Rouge, Tiger can't wait to go. The sudden death of her grandmother and the revelation of a dark family secret prompt Tiger Ann to make a decision that will ultimately change her life.
