The Teacher (1977) follows the journey of a dedicated young student from Havana who chooses to venture into a impoverished rural area during the early stages of the Cuban revolution. His mission is to educate the local peasants in literacy. He is assigned to the Ciénega de Zapata zone, a region plagued by anti-Castro guerrilla activity. Complications arise when he finds himself teaching the spouse of a guerrilla squad leader. Tensions escalate further as government militia establishes a base in the small town, leading to a series of confrontations and challenges.
