Jobless waiter Hans Albert Hauptmann accidentally runs into a meeting of ex-Wehrmacht combatants in Cologne, West Germany. They mistake him with a high nazi officer and he's considered to be just returned from his exile in Argentina. He does not clarify his identity since they offer him food and a hotelroom and treat him with dignity. Later it turns out that the officer they mistake him for was responsible for the killing of several hostages and burning a village down in France. But being a 'real' Nazi-criminal, he realizes, does get him even more attention and support and so he starts to exploit the misunderstanding further.
