The Twonky (1953) follows College Literature Professor Cary West, who is less than thrilled when his wife, Carolyn, buys him a television set while she is away. Cary is initially pleased when the delivery man returns to collect the $100 deposit Carolyn forgot to pay, as he doesn't have the money and hopes the TV will be taken back. However, a $5 bill Cary accidentally drops near the TV mysteriously multiplies, and the delivery man leaves with the cash. Cary soon discovers that the TV is not just a ordinary appliance; it comes to life, performing tasks like lighting his pipe, washing dishes, and vacuuming. However, the TV also exhibits a mind of its own, dictating what Cary can read and write, and even marching around to military music. Moreover, it protects Cary from any perceived threats, including treasury agents investigating the duplicate $5 bills, police responding to a call the TV made for a 'female companion,' and a bill collector who tries to move in until Cary pays his debts.
