In the 13 c. Yoan Asen ruled Bulgaria. The king is good and wise ruler, but very authoritative as well. He realizes that prolonged wars have exhausted his people and decided to uphold peace by all means. His solution is to marry several times in order to protect the interests of the state. He even sends his only love to a monastery. Following his goal, King Yoan Asen sacrifices the personal happiness of his brother and his daughter as well. Obviously his power does not allow him to grant happiness.
