Abandoned by her stepfather, the orphaned Mona Fairfax, nicknamed Young Mother Hubbard by her neighbors, is forced to care for herself and her three siblings on the family farm. When Daniel Banning, the landlord, shows up demanding back rent, Mona pleads with him to allow the family to remain on the farm, but he refuses and calls the Children's Welfare Society. Taken forcibly to the Society's headquarters, each child is assigned to a different cheerless foster home, but Mona begs for and is granted one more night on the farm before the separation.
