Fremont (2023) follows the journey of Donya, a 20-something Afghan translator who once worked with the U.S. government. Struggling with insomnia, she resides alone in Fremont, California, in a building inhabited by other Afghan immigrants. Her solitary life often involves dining alone at a local eatery while engrossed in soap operas. Donya's life takes a turn when she is promoted to crafting fortunes at a fortune cookie factory in the city. As her words of wisdom are read by strangers across the Bay Area, Donya's deep-seated desires compel her to send a message out into the world, uncertain of where it will take her.
