When he hears that his father the king has died, Hamlet (Mel Gibson) returns home to Denmark. He finds that mother Gertrude (Glenn Close) has married his uncle Claudius who is now the new king and they are planning that Hamlet should be married to Ophelia. But the ghost of Hamlet's father appears to tell Hamlet that he was murdered by Claudius and Gertrude. Hamlet’s determination to avenge his father’s murder and the remarriage of his mother leads to an intricate tapestry of intrigue, introspection, deception, and death.
