Made by the scenarist who wrote the script for Evgeny Tsymbal’s Dziga and His Brothers, this film offers a different view on the tangled relationships among Boris Kaufman, Mikhail Kaufman, and Dziga Vertov. A familiar, very Vertovian, story: two former collaborators disagree, and two different movies on the same three brothers are born. If Tsymbal (formerly a historian) paints an epic picture of the tumultuous time — wars, revolutions, purges, emigration — which split and scattered the Kaufman brothers, Nepevny (a film historian) looks for the creative and psychological, rather than historical or political, factors which shaped the three different paths the three brothers took.
