9-year-old Tunisian Zaineb has lost her father. She now lives with her mother and younger brother, but has started noticing her mother's long and very late phone calls with an old flame, who moved from their home country of Tunisia to Canadian Quebec. It doesn't last long before Zaineb herself is on her way to cold Canada, a new family and not least a new stepsister, the same-aged and very perky Wijdene. The film's director, Kaouther Ben Hania, follows both girls closely for six years, as they in their budding teenage years argue about everything from religion and marriage to Katy Perry and computer games – and slowly grow closer as both sisters and friends. 'Zaineb Hates the Snow' is a film that leaves an indelible mark on our emotions, as we gradually get to know Zaineb better and therefore feel and understand the big changes she is actually going through over the years. From the tearful parting with the Muslim school in Tunisia to the new life with skating and snowy weather in secular Quebec. A touching coming of age story with an incredibly strong protagonist, who you can't help but fall in love with.
