The Black Bird (1975) follows the story of Sam Spade Jr., who reluctantly takes over his late father's detective agency in San Francisco. Sam Jr. is burdened with his father's sarcastic secretary, Effie Perrine, and the agency's tradition of aiding marginalized communities. The plot thickens when a corpulent man, Caspar Gutman, is murdered near the agency, uttering the cryptic phrase, "It's black and as long as your arm." Soon after, Sam Jr. receives an offer from a member of the Order of St. John's Hospital to buy his father's seemingly worthless copy of the Maltese Falcon. Meanwhile, a right-wing extremist named Gordon Immerman, whom Spade nicknames "Andrew Jackson," is tasked with ensuring the delivery of the bird. Despite initial hostility, Immerman develops a fondness for the young detective.
