Fucking Different
Seven lesbian filmmakers in Berlin were each invited to make a short film about how they imagine gay male love and sexuality; in return, seven gay filmmakers were each invited to make a short film about lesbian sexuality and desire. The filmmakers were given no limitations on genre, whether animation, documentary or narrative. The format was also free, from experimental to conventional. The only limits were on running time (3 to 7 minutes) and video format (a MiniDV endproduct). The result is very diverse collection of films which above all illustrate, challenge and deconstruct the stereotypes which — to a disturbing degree — remain firmly anchored in our minds, despite an apparent coming together of gays and lesbians in the past decade. The very diversity of these films is expected to provoke a broadening of role-conceptions and gender-specific patterning.
