The year is 1989 and a 35 year old man is telling his story from a dark prison cell in Turin. The prisoner is Sergio Segio, one of the founders of the armed left-wing group Prima Linea (Front Line), who went underground in the mid-1970s in hope of achieving the “revolutionary dream”. After being sentenced to more than twenty years in prison, Sergio recounts the time of his arrest and, prior to that, one day in particular; the 3rd of January 1982. We flashback to him in an apartment in Venice, where he has gathered together a group of militants who are preparing to carry out a dangerous mission: freeing four female prisoners, including Susanna Ronconi, the woman Sergio loves and hopes to start a new life with once she is freed.
